Realism Research Philosophy

What is Realism Research Philosophy?

The realism research philosophy is based on the premise that reality is separate from the human mind. This philosophy is based on the premise that knowledge is developed scientifically. Direct and critical realism are the two types of realism.

Direct realism, also known as naive realism, can be described as "what you see is what you get”. In other words, direct realism portrays the world through personal human senses.

Critical realism, on the other hand, argues that humans do experience the sensations and images of the real world. According to critical realism, sensations and images of the real world can be deceptive and they usually do not portray the real world.

The difference between direct and critical realism can be illustrated using an optical illusion like the one below. Because of the adjacent contrasting squares, Squares A and B appear to be different colors, although they are the same color. Because this is what they see, direct realists would claim that squares A and B have different colors.

Critical realists, on the other hand, acknowledge that our senses and other factors can get in the way of our ability to research reality. As a result, critical realists might remark that squares A and B are the same color.

Direct realists believe that the world is largely stable. They are solely interested in one level, whether it is an individual, a group, or an organization. Critical realists, on the other hand, recognize the value of the multi-level investigation. As a researcher who adheres to the critical realism research philosophy, you must recognize the effect and interdependence of the individual, the group, and the organization.

Critical realism is more popular and suitable than direct realism, according to academics, because it may capture a more complete image while investigating a phenomenon. As a result, if you've chosen realism as your research philosophy, you should play the critical realist role rather than the direct realist position.
